A Corpus-based Study on the Semantics of Construction “-ly adverb+speaking”

In academic writing the disjunct construction "-ly adverb+speaking"conveys comments and attitudes of the authors and is subject to its register.The collocation of the construction"-ly adverb+speaking"and adverbs should be differentiated between academic language and other registers.Based on COCA,BAWE and a self-built corpus consisting of graduation theses of Chinese English learners,the current study examines the construction"-ly adverb+speaking"quantitively with collostructional analysis.It is found that in all three working corpora,generally,strictly and broadly are strongly preferred in the construction"-ly adverb+speaking";while in the self-built corpus,some typical words in oral English are emerged but not in the other two native corpora.Besides,according to this study,collostructional analysis would provide a frequency-based study with more scientific insight.
