Study on Mechanism of Crack Propagation and Failure of the Rock in Oil Engineering

The rock in oil engineering is under the action of high temperature and high pressure with deep deposition. It is a brittle material and heterogeneous discontinuous body. The process of its failure is one of initiation of inner cracks of the rock followed by their propagation, connection and link up. In this paper, a theoretical analysis on mechanism of crack propagation and failure of the rock in oil engineering was carried out. The process of initiation of inner cracks of the rock followed by their propagation, connection and link up was investigated by experimental study. It is concluded that the initiation, propagation and link up of the cracks are caused by the action of jet water wedge. It offers a theoretical basis for design and construction of oil engineering work.
