Shrinkage Analysis Of Salt Cavern Storage

The pressure of salt cavern storage changes in a high–low-high cycle within a particular range,the stress in salt rock around cavern varies because of the upside strata and cavern inner pressure.The salt rock will creep when it is under high pressure,and because the cavern inner pressure is always lower than the upside strata pressure,so the rock around cavern will move toward the cavern center and it causes the cavern to be deformed and shrunk.The cavern shrinkage will lead to volume loss and lowering down the cavern operation efficiency.The shrinkage of cavern has relationship with salt creep and from laboratory creep test and creep modeling,the constitutive equation can be created for description of salt creep behavior.By using constitutive equation and 3-D cavern model,the creep displacement in different point of salt cavern can be modeled and predicted with different operation condition.In a case study,there is a fast shrinkage in the beginning of cavern operation,and then the shrinkage slows down and becomes stable.Therefore,in the beginning of cavern operation,the operator must draw up legitimate operating parameters and monitor cavern creep to ensure the safety and high efficiency.
