Advances in Study on Microstructural Characteristic and Deformation Mechanism of Clay

The research achievements in the microstructure of clay are introduced in this paper in three aspects: the special techniques for observing the clay microstructure,the mechanism on clay formation and the characteristics of clay microstructure with deformation.Based on the analysis and discussion of these achievements,it can be concluded that these achievements obtained are mainly focused on the overall change trend of particles,pores and bonds among particles.Furthermore,some suggestions are proposed,that new techniques should be developed to effectively observe the microstructure change of clay,more studies on the interaction and bonds among clay particles are necessary for better understanding the microstructural mechanism of clay deformation,and discovering the relationship between microstructural characteristics of clay and macro-physical quantities of soil mechanics,which are helpful for engineering practice.
