Assessment of Shallow Groundwater Vulnerability in Taiyuan Basin

Based on the characteristics of the influential factors for groundwater vulnerability in Taiyuan Basin,Shanxi Province,the DRASTIC index system and the assessment criteria for groundwater vulnerability are established according to the specific conditions and the existing data of this area,selecting depth of the water table,net recharged water amount,aquifer material,soil type,topography,impact of vadose zone and hydraulic conductivity are selected as the affecting parameters.According to the criteria,all these seven parameters are evaluated and all the questions concerned are elaborated.After getting the evaluation chart of seven indices in the DRASTIC model,the seven indices are made through weight,and thus,the final synthetic evaluation chart pictures of groundwater vulnerability in Taiyuan Basin come into being.The research results show that the water resource along the Fenhe River banks and in Wujiabo Industrial District are of high vulnerability,severe pollution and low security,which is a threat to the groundwater ecology safety.On the contrary,those of the Loess Plateau on both sides of this Basin are of low vulnerability.The assessment results show that the DRASTIC Model can reflect the level of the groundwater vulnerability in Taiyuan Basin.The results of groundwater vulnerability research can be a useful reference for land use planning,groundwater protection planning and groundwater monitoring and can also make the public learn more about the groundwater pollution risk and have an idea of precaution against groundwater pollution.
