EFFECTS OF α-MSH ON GASTRIC DISTENSION SENSITIVE NEURONS IN RAT DORSAL VAGAL COMPLEX

Objective To observe the effects of α-MSH on gastric distension sensitive neurons in rat dorsal vagal complex(DVC).Methods Electrophysiological recordings technique was adopted to investigate the discharge frequency of gastric distension neurons of rats before and after microinjection of α-MSH in DVC and of 9 g/L NaCl as controls.Results Sixty-two neurons were recorded in DVC,35 of them(56.45%) responded to gastric distension,in which,20 revealed increasing of discharge frequency after distension(t=4.665,P0.01),15 were inhibited(t=4.404,P0.01);and for the rest 27 failed to respond.Of 17 GD-excitatory neurons in the DVC examined for response to α-MSH,13 neurons were activated and four neurons failed to respond.Of 11 GD-inhibitory neurons in the DVC examined for response to α-MSH,nine neurons were depressed(t=3.393,P0.01) and two neurons failed to respond.The difference of discharge frequency of sensitive distention neurons,before and after distention,was not significant.Conclusion α-MSH is involved in adjusting the electric activity of GD-sensitive neurons in DVC,and regulating energy metabolism and feeding activity maybe partly via this pathway.
