Objective To study the effects of taurine on cell membrane fluidity. Method The membrane fluidity was studied with fluorescence polarization(P) and mean microviscosity (η ) with DPH as a probe. Result After feeding the mice with 1% taurine water (taurine group) for 110 days, the P value and η of red blood cell(RBC) membrane were 0.243±0.015 and 2.392±0.65 respectively, the corresponding data of control group were 0.267±0.021, 2.821±0.58. The results suggested that the RBC membrane fluidity of turine group was better than that of the control group( t=2.60,P0.05). In Erlich ascitic tumor mice in taurine group the P value and η were 0.108±0.02 and 0.618±0.14 respectively, which were much better than the control group ( t=3.27, P0.01) . Conclusion The results suggested that the taurine had an positive action in mantaining the stability of the cell membrane.
