TWO IMPORTANT PROBLEMS OF EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION IN THE SECTION OF MASSIVE GROUND ICE

Based on the data obtained after three-year observation of the Reshui experimental embankment in the section with massive ground ice together with practices in railway construction in the island permafrost region in Da Hinggan Ling, this paper analyses the influence of the construction seasons on the permafrost table under the embankment. It presents formulas for calculating both the number of years for the dissipation of stored heat in the embankment body and the maximun he'ight of embankment required for dissipation of the stored heat in the n-th year after the construction. It confirms that the ventilation embankment is one of the suitable kinds of construction in summer. At the same time, it points out that water ( including surface water and suprapermafrost water ) is always the principal cause of bringing about serious settlement of the embankment, and that the intercepting dike is an effective drainage facility to stop not only the surface water but also the suprapermafrost water. Furthermore, a formula for calculating the height of an intercepting dike is suggested.
