Maritime Characteristics of Hailuogou Glacier in the Gongga Mountains

Hailuogou Glacier is referred to as a typical monsoonal maritime glacier. Through field observations on the glacier some principal characteristics are summarized as following the surviving of the glacier is attributed to the aboundant accumulation from grand high mountain range. The main process of ice formation is the metamorphism from melting-refreezing of the seasonally accumulated snow, therefore there exists a broad belt of superimposed ice. Ice temperatue in the ablation area is near to the melting point so that the glacier has a rapid surface velocity. Mean velocity at the middle section of the ablation area is up to 171.4 m/ year. Based on, measurements of water balance in the glacier catchment in recent years this galcier shows a tendency of mass lose and the glacier terminus is retreating.
