Ice-wedge Casts First Discovered in the Qilian Mountains and Their Paleoclimatic Implications

WU Ji-chun1,SUN Li-ping2,SHENG Yu1,WU Qing-bai1,LI Jin-ping1(1.State Key Laboratory of frozen Soil Engineering,CAREERI,CAS,Lanzhou Gansu 730000,China;2.Local Railway Office of Qinghai Province,Xining Qinghai 810000,China)
A group of ice wedge casts were discovered in the source areas of the Datong River on the southern slopes of the eastern Qilian Mountains(37°51′ N,100°08′ E,3 618 m a.s.l.) in November 2007.The top widths of these U-shaped wedges range from 1.5 to 3.0 m,and the depths vary from 1.0 to 3.0 m.The loess and silt wedges are in alluvial debris strata. The ice wedge casts indicate that the permafrost developed in this area during some cold periods. This discovery might be significant for studying paleoclimate and evolution of permafrost in the Qilian Mountains.
