Revegetation in Permafrost Regions along a Linear Project

The construction of linear project,such as oil pipeline,road and railway,in cold regions has resulted in pronounced fragmentation and disturbance to the vegetation and underlying frozen ground.Leak from oil pipeline of various reasons can result in oil pollution,causing vegetative degradation and damaging environment.Severe disturbances of vegetation can alter hydrological and thermal conditions at the interface between soil surface and ambient atmosphere.Subsequently enhanced heat absorption,raised ground temperature;deepened seasonal thaw penetration can induce or accelerate the degradation of permafrost and destabilize the foundations of linear infrastructures.Revegetation along linear projects in cold regions is therefore studied,tested,and practiced for stabilizing engineering foundations in frozen ground.Revegetation should use natural recovery and local vegetative succession,with little human intervention.To select proper plant species and establish relevant methods,physical conditions,such as soil,moisture,nutrients and species distribution along the linear infrastructures,should be carefully investigated.The experiences from the Trans-Alaska pipelines and the Qinghai-Tibet Railway are good lessons to the proposed China-Russia crude oil pipeline.
