Experimental Study of the Snow Evaporation in Desert and Oases of Junggar Basin,Xinjiang

Based on the snow evaporation-condensation experiments in the Beishawo Experimental Site located in the southern edge of Gurbantunggut Desert and the Fukang Oasis in Sangong River watershed on the north slopes of Tianshan Mountains from November 2007 to March 2008,the snow evaporation characteristics in Junggar Basin were analyzed. Results show that daily snow evaporation is 0^015 mm for inter-dune clearing and 0^02 mm for oasis,and the days of net condensation account for 31^9% of total measured days. The snow evaporation is 1^73 mm for inter-dune and 1^95 mm for oasis,accounting for 6^51% and 7^37% of the total winter precipitation,respectively. Snow evaporation in openings is higher than under H.ammodendron stands. There is a net condensation of 0^41 mm under stands and an evaporation of 0^86 mm in openings during Dec. 2007 to Feb. 2008. The results of correlation analysis show that snow evaporation in Junggar Basin mainly depends on air temperature. The correlation coefficients between snow evaporation and maximum daily air temperature,mean daily air temperature,mean relative humidity,mean wind speed are 0^749,0^755,0^348 and 0^544 in Gurbantunggut Desert and 0^687,0^720,0^240 and 0^365 in Fukang Oases,respectively. The snow evaporation in Junggar Basin is lowest as compared with the Tianshan Mountains and other arid regions in the world. The reasons of lower snow evaporation are low air temperature and foggy weather conditions in the basin.
