The Climatic Characteristics of the Maximum Seasonal Frozen Depth in the Tibetan Plateau

The maximum seasonal frozen depth in the Tibetan Plateau has a close relation with the land surface process in cold regions. Records of the maximum frozen depth and 5 cm ground temperature at 35 weather stations in the plateau from 1961 to 1998 are taken in this paper to study the characteristics of spatial and temporal distribution of maximum seasonal frozen depth variability in the active layer. The conclusions can be drawn as follows:the maximum seasonal frozen depth (MFD) has obvious varying characteristics and the maximum seasonal frozen depth increased during the period from the 1960s to the middle 1980s. From the middle 1980s on,it is decreasing. The cumulative values of negative ground temperature index at 5 cm depth bellow the surface can characterize the variation features of MFD. And the MFD is one of the good parameters to show the surface heating source intensity.
