The Features of Climate Changes in the Five River Source Regions of the Tibetan Plateau

Based on annual mean temperature and precipitation data obtained from thirty meteorological stations in the source regions of the Yangtze River,Yellow River,Lancang River,Nujiang River and Yarlung Zangbo River,the features of climate change in the Tibetan Plateau for the 54-year period of 1954-2007 are investigated through calculating the rate of climate trends and wavelet analysis of anomalies(Mexican Hat function).The results show that the annual mean temperature in the source regions varied between 7 ℃ and-3 ℃,more in the southeast and less in the northwest.There was a warming trend year by year,and the trend has increased more intensely since the 1990s.Generally,there was more precipitation in the southeast than northwest.At the same latitude,precipitation in the east is more than that in the west.Precipitation averaged over 2001 to 2005 was the maximum among the 54 year.There were a few periodic oscillations of annual mean temperature and precipitation in the high frequency zone with a number of abrupt change points,while in the middle and low frequency there was less abrupt change.The regional temperature increasing rate analysis found that the increasing rate was different from place to place in the source regions.Air temperature increasing rate was the maximum in the source regions of the Yarlung Zangbo River(0.54℃·(10a)-1),followed by that in the Yellow River(0.31℃·(10a)-1),and the minimum in the source regions of the Lancang River and the Nujiang River(0.17℃·(10a)-1).Apart from a few stations,annual mean temperature of the thirty stations increased generally.Precipitation in the source regions of the Lancang River increased most quickly,while that of the Yarlung Zangbo River increased slowly.In terms of the entire source regions of the Tibetan Plateau,temperature and precipitation were increasing in general,showing a warm and humid tendency,but the increase of precipitation was relatively weak.
