Effect of Sc and Ti additions on microstructures and tensile properties of Al-Mg alloys

The effect of the additions of Sc and Ti on the microstructures and tensile properties of Al-Mg alloys has been studied. The results show that the additions of Sc and Ti significantly increase the strength of Al-Mg alloys, and result in a superior combination of strength and ductility. The Al-Mg alloys containing Sc and Ti may form Al 3(Sc, Ti) composite particles. The primary Al 3(Sc, Ti) particles can substantially refine the grain size of aluminum alloy castings,and more secondary Al 3(Sc, Ti) dispersoids precipitate in Al-Mg-Sc-Ti alloy, they are much more effective on inhibiting recrystallization and strengthening the alloys. As the price of Sc is much expensive than that of Ti, less Sc is required to produce Al alloys containing Sc by using the composite additions of Sc and Ti.
