Dynamic damage progress of adiabatic shear band of steel

Hat - shaped samples of steels are impacted by a large - energy and high - speed punch in order to study the micro - damage mechanisms of the adiabatic shear band of steels under high - rate impact. The results show that the initiation of a adiabatic shear band does not mean the happening of a shear fracture, and the appearance of a macro - crack. The ways of micro - damage include angled micro - cracks with the bands, micro - cracks in the interfaces between the bands and the matrix, micro - cracks in the middle of the bands, and voids. During the initiation and growth of the micro - damages, adia- batic shear bands are destroyed and a fracture occurs.
