Research progress in strengthening and toughening of alumina matrix ceramic material

The brittleness oi alumina ceramic material limits the application of the material remarkably. The methods for improving toughness of alumina were reviewed. The toughening methods mainly include self-reinforced, particle dispersion toughening, whisker and fiber toughening, transformation toughening and combine toughening. However, the materials required cannot be prepared by single toughening method. The method of combine toughening will be the most main toughening method. The preparation of nanometer ceramic using nanometer particle toughening will be the developing direction in the field in the future.
