Study on the penetration performance of ceramic armors with different backing plate

The aim of this study was to determine contributions of different interfaces between ceramic and back plate to balli-stic performance of ceramic composite armor impacted by 12.7 mm piercing incendiary projectiles.In those experiments,verti-cal residual penetration depths to witness plates by bullets at effective velocity were defined as the penetrating resistance of the ceramic composite armors.The ceramic composite armors consist of Al2O3 backed plates with varying density.The results and discussions of the results indicate that the role of different interfaces of ceramic armor in ballistic performance decreases with the increasing of acoustic impedance of varying backed plate.
