Recent development on corrosion and protective measures of magnesium alloys

Magnesium alloy is a kind of light metal material being applied widely.It attracts much attention because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties.In particular,its high strength weight ratio makes it an ideal metal for automotive and aerospace applications,where weight reduction is of significant concern.Unfortunately,the corrosion becomes a key problem of hindering it to be got more wide application.In the present paper,its corrosion problems and the present research status of protective measures were reviewed.The means of improving its corrosion are as follows,developing new magnesium alloy,adopting rapid solidification processing,applying surface technologies,which include conversion coatings,anodizing,electrochemical plating,laser surface modification,ion implantation.
