Effect of magnesia and silica additives on properties of aluminium titanate ceramic

Effects and mechanisms of magnesia and silica additives on restraining thermal decomposition of aluminium titanate were studied by double-firing process. The results show that stability and flexural strength can be remarkably improved by adding composite additives of magnesia and silica. The flexural strength of the aluminium titanate prepared by adding 10 mol% magnesia and 15 mol% silica increases by 56% and the average thermal expansion coefficient is only 0.2×10-6/℃(RT~1 000 ℃). And when holding at 1 100 ℃ for 50 h, the aluminium titanate has no decomposition, even holding for 150 h, the decomposition ratio is only 9.5%.
