Corrosion property of magnesium alloy AZ31

The rapid surface alloying of AZ31 magnesium alloy by high current pulsed electron beam(HCPEB) was investigated.The microstructure of surface alloyed layer was analyzed and the corrosion property of AZ31 magnesium alloy samples in 5% NaCl solution before and after alloying was measured.The results show that within the scope of 10 μm deep layer,Al element content increases in the alloying layer and grain refines with Al element in the form of solid solution.Alloying aluminum on surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy can improve the corrosion resistance.The corrosion potential of the original sample is-1 231 mV and the polarization resistance is 0.453 1 kΩ·cm2.After alloying, the corrosion potential increases to-669.1 mV and the polarization resistance improves to 2.202 kΩ·cm2.The polarization resistance increases almost five times than that of original sample.
