Microstructure and mechanical properties of spray deposited Mg-9Al-4.5Ca alloy

Mg-9Al-4.5Ca billets were prepared by spray deposition. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the deposited and extruded billets were studied by means of optical microscop(OM),X-ray diffraction (XRD),scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and measurement of tensile properties. The results show that the structure of spray deposited Mg-9Al-4.5Ca alloy is much smaller than that of cast alloy, the microstructures are 3-5 μm equiaxed grains in deposited alloy and can be further refined after hot extruding. The phase in deposited billet includes α-Mg、Al2Ca、Mg2Ca、 Mg6Ca2Zn3 and MgZn2,but it transforms to α-Mg、Al2Ca、Mg2Ca、Mg17Al12 and MgZn2 after hot extruding. The strength of spray deposited magnesium alloy is much higher than that of MB7 alloy, the tensile strength,yield strength and elongation is 470 MPa,390 MPa and 8%respectively.Grain size refinement,solution strengthening and dispersion strengthening are the main mechanism.
