Effectiveness of erosion reducing additives assessed by measuring surface temperature inside gun barrel

A method was proposed to assess the effectiveness of erosion reducing additive by measuring the surface temperature inside gun barrel.First of all,a special temperature sensor was designed to measure the temperature at a certain position deep from the inner surface of barrel,and then the surface temperature could be extrapolated according the rule of heat-transfer.By the proposed method,the choices and formula of a new erosion reducing additive were tested in 14.5 mm ballistic gun.The peak temperature of the bore surface was used to assess the effectiveness of the erosion reducing additive.The new erosion reducing additive was used in 105 mm APFSDS with high-energy and high-explosion temperature nitramine propellants,which achieved a good result of reducing erosion of gun barrel.
