Effect of Self-steepening and Modulation Instability of Optical Pulses in Decreasing Dispersion Fibers

The effect of self steepening on the modulation instability of optical pulses in decreasing dispersion fibers is investigated. It is found that the main effect of self steepening is the reduction of the growth rate and the frequency range over which the gain occurs. It is also found that the broadest width corresponds to the optimal decrement velocity of the fiber dispersion.
