Scaling Effect of Micro Fluidic Systems

With miniaturization of the size, in micro-fluid systems appear some unique phenomena quite different from that in macro-fluid systems. Scaling effects of micro fluid caused by the feature size of the fluid decreasing to the order of magnitude μm~mm were overviewed. Effects of these factors, including the ratio of superficial area to volume, interface roughness, viscous force, gradient parameter, boundary layer streaming, on the micro-fluid were analyzed. As the scale of fluid decreases, the effect of heat and mass transport process related to surface, interface roughness, and surface force will enhance, with internal viscous force and external interface force becoming the major factors. The classical Navier-Stokes is not applicable to micro-fluid systems due to the impact of viscous dissipation, heat diffusion, condensability slip flow and other factors.
