Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development

DU Liqun(School of Economics, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China)
It is quite clear that if present trends in global population growth, economic growth and consumption patterns continue, the natural environment and resources will be increasingly stressed. Distinct environmental gains and improvements will probably be offset by the pace and scale of global economic growth, increased global environmental pollution and accelerated degradation of the Earth's renewable resource base. The severe challenges that man encounters include health, biodiversity, agricultural production, water and energy, and they are closely related to resource, environment, population, poverty and economic systems. Furthermore, they are concerned with a series of important issues on our current sustainable development. So we should begin with these issues and take action to find means to tackle the root causes of environmental and resource problems in order to realize sustainable development. 
