Implied Author, Narrative Structure, and Subtext: Kate Chopin's "Désirée's Baby"

SHEN Dan(School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China)
Critics tend to form a somewhat fixed interpretive frame of an author, especially concerning the author's ideological stance. Such an interpretive frame often leads in varying degrees to the neglect of the difference in stance among works by the same author. Many critics, bound by the interpretive frame that sees Kate Chopin as a progressive writer, take "Diseree's Baby" as a progressive work against racial and patriarchal oppression. A thorough analysis of the structure of the narrative, however, reveals that in the subtext, racial politics in the opposite direction predominates and to a great extent subverts or substitutes the racial and gender politics in the surface text. In order to gain a better understanding of the subtext, it is necessary not only to carry out a careful and deep-going analysis of the narrative structure, but also to pay attention to the relation between the implied author and the real author, as well as that among the different implied authors created by the same author in socio-historical context.
