The Relationship between Southwest Associated University's Ethos and the Cultivation of Wen Yiduo's Spirit

Zhou Mian(The Research Center on Chinese Students Abroad and Modern China, Xuzhou Normal University, Xuzhou 221009, China)
The cultivation of Wen Yiduo's spirit was closely related to the democratic ethos created by the Chinese Students Abroad of Southwest Associated University. The corrupt rear-area formed a sharp contrast with the scholars' devotion to the Anti-Japanese cause in the extremely impoverished condition, and it became the main cause for the cry of equality and democracy in Southwest Associated University and enabled Wen Yiduo to face the reality squarely and attack the corrupt society bravely. Under the influence of the university's concept and the outgoing and unrestrained character of the scholars, Wen Yiduo's democratic awareness grew to lofty aspirations and faced death unflinchingly. Due to the university's principle of independence, Southwest Associated University became a democratic fortress which offered a comparatively safe backup for the scholars and made it possible for Wen Yiduo to participate in the democratic activities.
