Eight Groups of Key Official Positions: the Elites' Identity of Officialdom and its Institutional Channel in the Middle and Late Tang Dynasty

Liu Houbin;School of History,Renmin University of China;
In the Middle and Late Tang Dynasty,family status,which had played a determinative role in the official selection system during the Southern and Northern Dynasties,gradually lost its realistic significance.Whether one was a former noble or a new aristocrat,he had to go through a new unified channel,so as to secure a higher official position and become a member of the political-social elite class. This new channel was not only the start of a palace graduate's promotion,but also a dynamic process through which was gradually formed a social ladder in the officialdom marked by the eight groups of key official positions(八俊) . The promotion of the eight groups of key official positions was a potential institutional channel for elite formation,and all the more an identity of officialdom with a hierarchical establishment. The formation of such an identity of officialdom required an official recommendation system,an official selection system and a bureaucracy,and simultaneously built a political culture,which in turn influenced the developmental process of the official recommendation system,the official selection system and the bureaucratic institution.
