The Three Changes of the Name of Jue with its Four Different Shapes:Deduced from the Bird-like Jue in Sanli Pictures by Nie Chongyi

Yan Buke;Research Center of Ancient Chinese History,Peking University;
The shape of Jue(wine vessel,爵) in Sanli Pictures(《三礼图》) by the Song scholar Nie Chongyi(聂崇义) is a wine vessel joined to the back of a bird. Starting from this rare bird-like Jue,this article tries to explore what Jue really is. The present author supposes that the name of Jue changed three times as a result of the transforming of its shape,which means that Jue could represent four different shapes of wine vessels in history. Specifically,they were the three-legged Jue before the Early Western Zhou Dynasty,the hopper-like Jue after the Early Western Zhou Dynasty,the cylinder-shaped Jue in the Spring and Autumn Period,and the bird-like Jue in the Han Dynasty.
