A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE OXYGEN CONSUMPTION,ENERGY REQUIRMENT,ASPHYXIATION POINT AND RESPIRATORY QUOTIENT OF THE FISH FRY AND YOUNG FISH

The author and the collaborators undertook the determination of oxygen consumption and eraergy requirements of the fish fry of Hypophthalmicthys molitrix, Aristichthys nobilis and Mylopharyngodon piceus, and oxygen consumption, asphyxiation point, energy lequire-ment and respiratory quotient of the young fish of Hypophthdmicthys molitrix, Aristichthys nobilis, Mylopharyngodon piceus, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Cyprinus carpio, and Caras-sius auratus. The results of these experiments are summarized below. The determination of the oxygen consumption, energy requirement and respiratory quotient of the fish fry during the summer season was continued at least for eight hours at each test. The results may be shown in the following table.Notts: 1) The unit of body weight of fish fry is in mg., that of young fish in grams. 2) In the table the data given are the average figures.There are inter-species and intra-species differences in the rates of oxygen consumption and energy requirement of these fishes. Among our important cultivated fishe,the oxygen consumption and energy requirement of Hypophthalmicthys molitrix rank the highest, those of Ariitichtkys nobilis, Mylopharyngodon piceus and Ctenopharyngodon idellus are the next, while those of Cyprinus carpio and Carasius auratus are the lowest. The oxygen consumption and energy requirements of the same species decrease relatively with the increase in age and body weight. But within the unit time (hr.), oxygen consumption and energy requirements of individual fish increase accordingly with the increase in age and body weight. These changes are closely related to the changes in stages of development. In these experiments the author did not attempt to determine oxygen consumption and energy requirement from the viewpoint of studying developmental stages. Accordingly, this paper is not in position to explain the varying rates of oxygen consumption and energy requirer tnent in the development of fishes and what relationships exist between different stages of development.The environment also influences the oxygen consumption and energy requirement of fishes. Far instance, within the normal range ol temperature, the rate of oxygen consumption and energy requirement increases with the rising of temperature. This phenomenon is more conspicuous in the lower ranges of water temperature.The cancellation of dissolved or free COl within certain ranges has little influence on the oxygon consumption and energy requirement of adult fish. In fish fry, as the regulatory mechanism of the central nervous system has not yet well developed, the rate of oxygen consumption is influenced by the changes of oxygen pressure ol the environment.As it is in other animals, there aie diunal variations in the oxygen consumption and energy requirement of fishes. These changes are. as a rule, free from day light influence of the experimental environment.There are inter-and intra-species variations in asphyxiation point and respiratory frequency of fishes, Among our important cultivated fishes, the asphyxiation point of Mylopharyngodon plceus is 0.89-0.63, ranking the highest, that for Hypophthalmicthys molitrix (0.72 - 0.34), Aristichthys nobilis (0.68 - 0.34), Ctenopharyngodon idellus (0.51 - 0.30) is the next, while that for Cyprinus carpio (0.34 - 0.30) and Carassius auratus (0.13 - 0.11) is the lowest. The asphyxiation point of diseased and wild fishes is generally higher than that of healthy cultivated ones.Within the normal ranges of temperature, the respiration frequency also increases with the rising of temperature. This phenomenon is more conspicuous in the cold-water fishes or in the lower ranges of temperature. Again the respiration frequency in fishes increases as dissolved oxygen in water decreases. Therefore, to a certain extent, the sudden increase of respiration frequency forecasts the asphyxiation of the fish.
