NOTES ON FISHES OF SOUTHERN TIBET, CHINA, WITH PROPOSAL OF ONE NEW GENUS, TETROSTICHODON

TCHANG TCHUNG-LIN, YUEH TsO-HUO (Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica)HWANG HWON-CHIN(Institute of Hydrobiology, Academia Sinica)
This paper gives, in addition to the fishes of the genera Schizopygopsis, Gymnocypris, and Nemachilus treated separately in three other papers, an account of the fish collection from southern Tibet. In all, 7 species belonging to 3 families and 5 genera are here described, among which a new genus Tetrostichodon is proposed.Family Salmonidae Genus Salmo Artedi Salmo trutta fario Linne12 specimens, Nos. TS-318-329; from Yathong "亚东" (Chomo Chu "卓姆河" or Yathong River "亚东河"). Total length 258-172 mm; standard length 199-149 mm. For description, see Tchang Wang (1962).Family Cyprinidae (Subfamily Schizothoracinae) Tetrostichodon, gen. nov.Body elongate, abdomen round; head conical, snout obtuse. Mouth inferior, transverse or arched; lower jaw short, horny edge covering its anterior margin. Barbels 2. Pharyngeal teeth in 4 rows, 1, 2, 3, 4(5)/(5)4, 3, 2, 1; flat, grinding surface at its tip. Lateral line complete. Scales small; vent and anal base with a scale-sheath. Dorsal with osseous spine, its commencement behind the origin of ventral. Anal short. Caudal forked. Gill-membrane joined with isthmus. Anal opening near the commencement of anal fin. Peritoneum brownish. Gonad poisonous. The present genus closely resembles genus Schizothorax Heckel (1838), but differs from the latter in having 4 rows (figs. 1 3) of pharyngeal teeth instead of only 3 rows.Genotype: Tetrostichodon o'connori (Lloyd).Tetrostichodon o'connori (Lloyd)24 specimens, Nos. TS-011-013, 020-022, 027, 084-086, 259-261, 348-354, 358, 360-361 376; from Lhasa "拉萨" and Shushul "曲水" (Lhasa Chu "拉萨河"), Shigatse "日喀則" (Nyang Chu "年楚河") and Lhatse "拉孜" (Tsangpo "雅鲁藏布江 "). Total length 463.5-89mm; standard length 376-70.5 mm: For descriptions, see Tchang Wang (1962).The fish was originally described under the name of Schizothorax o'connori by R. E. Lloyd (1908) as having "pharyngeal teeth ten on either side, rows not regularly arranged". Based on our specimens, we find that the pharyngeal teeth are actually in 4 rows and arranged as 1, 2, 3, 4(5)/(5)4, 3, 2, 1 (Figs. 1-3). We, therefore, propose a new generic name, Tetrostichodon, with Tetrostichodon o'connori (Lloyd) as its genotype. Genus Schizothorax HeckelKey to species of genus Schizothorax1 (2) Mouth transverse, lower jaw with horny edge (subgenus Oreinui); more than 30 series of scalesabove the lateral lin S. mangchiackii (Fang)2 (1) Mouth not transverse, lower jaw without horny edge (subgenus Schizothorax); less than 30 series ofscales above the lateral line.3 (4) Mouth horse-shoe-shape; lower lip fleshy; barbels short S. baileyi (Lloyd)4 (3) Mouth arched; lower lip not fleshy; barbels long S. tnacropogon ReganSchizothorax wangchiachii (Fang) (Figs. 4 5)1 specimen No. TS-377, from eastern Tibet (Chamdo "昌都"). Total length 405mm; standard length 333mm.Schizothorax baileyi (Lloyd)12 specimens, Nos. TS-018-019, 024, 087, 091-093, 263-264, 280-282; from Lhasa Shushul (Lhasa Chu), Shigatse (Nyang Chu) and Lhatse (Tsang-po). Total length 433-128mm; standard length 356-104.5mm. For descriptions, see Tchang Wang (1962).Schizothorax tnacropogon Regan8 specimens, Nos. TS-016, 025-026, 088-090, 274 355; from Lhasa Shushul (Lhasa Chu), Shigatse (Nyang Chu) and Lhatse (Tsang-po). Total length 409-248 mm; standard length 322-192 mm. For descriptions, see Tchang Wang (1962).Genus Ptychobarbtu Steindachner Ptychobarbus dipogon Regan (Figs. 6 7)7 specimens, Nos. TS-015, 023, 123-124, 265-267; from Shigatse Kangma "康马" (Nyang Chu) and Lhatse (Tsang-po). Total length 345-195mm; standard length 300-155 mm.The fish was originally described as possessing 2 barbels ("no anterior barbel") by Regan C. .T. (1905), under the genus Schizotkorax. This is clearly a misidentification for the genus Ptychobarbus.Family SisoridaeGenus Glaplosternon McClelland Glyptosternon maculattu (Regan) (Figs. 8 9)5 specimens, Nos. TS-014, 094-095, 279 357; from Shigatse (Nyang Chu) and Lhatse (Tsang-po).. Total length 290-149mm; standard length 254-132mm.
