THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION AND FAUNAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TETRAODONTIFORM FISHES OF CHINA

CHU YUAN-TING AND Hsu CHENG-YU Fisheries College; Fisheries Institute of East China Sea)
As known at present, there are 10 families, 42 genera and 98 species of the tetrao-dontiform fishes heretofore recorded in China. The family Triacanthodidae is represented by 4 genera and 5 species, all inhabiting in the South China Sea, with only one species ranging to the East China Sea; the Triacanthidae by 2 genera and 5 species, all occurring in the South China Sea, except a single species extending to the East China Sea and Yellow Sea; the Balistidae by 6 genera and 18 species, all being distribeted in the South China Sea, and only a single species ranging to the East China Sea and Yellow Sea; the Aluteridae by 11 genera and 16 species, South China Sea having 11 genera and 15 species, East China Sea 5 genera and 5 species, and Yellow Sea 4 genera and 4 species; the Psilocephalidae by 1 genus and 1 species, distributed in the South China Sea and East China Sea. The Aracanidae is represented by 2 genera and 2 species, one genus and one species being found respectively in the South China Sea and the East China Sea; the Ostraciontidae by 4 genera and 8 species, all inhabiting in the South China Sea, but some species also ranging to the East China Sea and Yellow Sea. The Tetraodontidae is represented by 8 genera and 35 species, all genera and 27 species occurring in the South China Sea, 3 genera and 17 species in the East China Sea, only a single genus and 10 species in the Yellow Sea; the distribution of species of the genus Fugu being rather special in that they are most abundant in the East China Sea instead of in the South China Sea, as is usually the case; the Diodontidae is represented by 2 genera and 6 species, all inhabiting in the South China Sea, two species being distributed to the East China Sea, and a single species extending further northward to the Yellow Sea. The Moleidae is represented by 2 genera and 2 species, one species being found in the whole coast and another only distributed in the South China Sea. The representation of Trio-dontidae has not yet been fully known in China. The tetraodontiform fishes of China may be grouped in three types: (1) The warm-water, comprising 66 species (67% of the total), (2) the warm-temperate, with 29 species (30%), and (3) the cold-temperate, consisting of 3 species (3%).In the South China Sea Area, there arc, altogether 88 species (90% of the total), of which 66 are warm-water and 22 warm-temperate species, without any cold-temperate elements. The number of species of the East China Sea is decreased to 32 (33%), of which 15 are warm-water, 15 warm-temperate, and 2 cold-temperate species. The Yellow Sea has only 20 species (20%), among which 7 are warm-water and 10 warm-temperate species, and the cold-temperate species are increased to 3 from 2 in the East China Sea.There are 65 species of tetraodontiform fishes distributed in common in China and Japan, 55 species common in China and Indonesia, 53 species common in China and Philippines, and 31 species common in China and Korea. 6 species are peculiar in being confined in distribution to China and Japan; 2 to China and Korea; 6 to China, Korea and Japan. There are 8 endemic species in China, 7 in Japan, 6 in Indonesia, 4 in Philippines, and none in Korea.
