A SURVEY OF AMPHIBIANS IN XIZANG (TIBET)

Herpetological Department, Sichuan Biological Research Institute
From May to August of 1973,a survey of Amphibia was carried out in eastern, southern, and south-eastern parts of Xizang.2393 adult specimens and a large number of tadpoles and egg-masses were collected. They have been classified in 24 species (including two unidentified species) belonging to 10 genera,5 families and 2 orders.Among the 24 species, five are considered as new species, one new subspecies, two unidentified species, four new records for China, and eight new Xizang records.(Table 1)Diagnoses of five new species and one new subspecies are given as follows.1.Scutiger nyingchiemis Fei,sp.nov.(Color plate,fig.1,2;Text fig.1,2)HOLOTYPE No.7310400,adult male;type locality:Nyingchi,Xizang,alt.3040 m;June 3,1973.ALLOTYPE No.7310278,adult female;collected from the same locality of the holotype,alt.3175m;June 1,1973.PARATYPES 27 collected with the holotype, altitude 3030-3175m;May 29 to June 3,1973,6 1,collected near Bomi city,Xizang, altitude 2730 m;June 9 to July 1,1973.Juneviles,tadpoles and eggs collected from both localities mentioned above.1,1,collected from Yadong alt.3300-4560m;August 26,1973,July 28,1974. DIAGNOSIS This new Scutiger differs from S8.sikkimensis (Blyth) and 8.boulengeri (Bedriaga) by being about 1/3 to 1/2 webbed on the outer sides of first three toes and inner side of the 5th toe, while the toes of S.sikkimensis are just slightly webbed and those of S.boulengeri generally 2/3 webbed. In both sexes of this new Scutiger and 8.sikkimensis the belly is entirely smooth. But in male of 8.boulengeri there are many small scattered warts on the belly;in the center of each of these warts there is a large black spine surrounded by many tiny spines. In the female of S.boulengeri there are some warts on the hinder part of the belly.2.Bufo cyphosus Ye,sp.nov.(Color plate,fig.3;Text fig.3) HOLOTYPE No.7310559,adult female;type locality:Chayu,Xizang,alt.1540m;July 20,1973.ALLOTYPE No.7310589,adult male;collected from the same locality of the holotype;July 23,1973.PAEATYPES 3,5;collected from the same locality of the holotype, altitude 1540-2100m;July 20 to 29,1973.11 juveniles;collected from Medo,Xizang,alt.1430-1500m;July 21,1973,September 8,1974.DIAGNOSIS This new species is similar to B.biporcatus Gravenhorst by having a pair "()" shaped low narrow bony crest on the top of head, but differs by:1.parotoid glands large and somewhat subtriangular in shape, touching upper eyelids;2.occipital region distinctly elevated and part between bony crest depressed;3.1st.finger somewhat longer than the second;4.distinct dark brown symmetrical patterns on dorsum in female;5.no vocal sae in male.3.Rana yadongensis Wu,sp.nov.(Test fig.4)HOLOTYPB No.73II0128,adult male;type locality:Yadong,Xizang,alt.2900 m;August 19,1973.ALLOTYPE No.73II0129,adult female;collected with the holotype.PARATYPES 3,1,3 juveniles and tadpoles collected from the same locality of the holotype,alt.2900-3400m;August 19 to 25,1973.3,collected from Nyanang,Xizang, altitude 3370 m;May 22,1966.DIAGNOSIS This new species has black spots on dorsum and lateral sides of the body, comparatively less on the mid-dorsal region and a transverse groove between the posterior corners of the eyes and a black band on the anterior edge of the groove. It is closely related to B.blanfordii Boulenger but the male of the latter species has not any secondary sex characters, while in B.yadongensis there are more than ten nuptial spines on the first finger, fewer on the second, and there is also an internal vocal sac.B.polunini Smith also has such nuptial spines but lacks an internal vocal sac.4.Rana maculosa chayuensis Ye,subsp.nov.(Text fig.5,6) HOLOTYPE No.7310524,adult male;type locality:Chayu,Xizang,alt.1540m;July 18,1973.ALLOTYPE No.7310545,adult female;collected from the same locality of the holotype;July 21,1973.PAEATYPES 8,18.37 juveniles and tadpoles;Chayu,Xizang, altitude 1540-1550 m;July 15 to August,1973;2,4,4 juveniles and tadpoles collected from Medo,Xizang,alt.1000-2300m;July 16 to August 23,1973.DIAGNOSIS This new subspecies differs from the nominate subspecies Liu et Hu by:1.its most
