STUDEIS ON THE BIOLOGY OF THE PSEUDOANNALATE WOLF SPIDER,LYCOSA PSEUDOANNULATA BOES. ET STR.

WANG HONGQUAN,ZHOU JIATOU, LIU GUIYUN(Department of Biology,Hunan Normal College)
During 1977-1980,we carried a series of observations both in the laboratory and outdoors in Changsha and Xiangyin counties 011 the life-history behaviour of the pseu-doannalate wolf spider.Lycosa pseudoannulata is one of predatory wolf spiders. The annual population dynamics of the wolf spiders is basically dependent on the population fluctuations of the plant hoppers, leaf hoppers and the wolf spiders.Lycosa pseudowrmlata shows maternal care of its young. This involves the care of both the egg sacs, formed 1-11 days after mating, and the 10-days-old young spider-lings.The minute spiderlings of the first instar are living and moulting in the egg sacs. The spiderlings commence boring out of the egg sacs, attaching themselves to the abdomen of the mother. They remain so attached for a period averaging 4.15 days, then become separated from the mother and henceforth live independently.A female produces an average of 5.4 egg sacs during its entire adult life of about 104.5-257 days.An egg sac contains an average of 111.37 eggs,of which an average of 601.4 spiderlings are produced. In the laboratory at room temperature,19.44-59% of the spiderling survived to sexual maturity.Adults developed gave a ratio of female and male 1.46:1.But the adults of the first generation gave a sex ratio of 1:1.32-1.67.A generation cycle (egg to egg) of Lycosa pseudoannulata takes an average of 141.6 days. The development of independent spidering takes an average of 135.75 days, although the time of the total generation (from egg to death of adult) spans an average of 316.68 days.Evidently, progenies derived from the first egg sac of a fern-ale attain sexual maturity before the parental generation terminates. Thus,in nature, the population of mature spiders may consist of individuals of at least two generation cycles. The responses of the spider to heat, thirst and hunger were examined. The habits and behaviour on the comnibalism, courtship, mating, egg laying, hatehing and moulting of Lycosa pseudoanmilata were also observed.
