COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE HYPOPHARYNGEAL BONE OF THE CHINESE MOJARRAS (PISCES: GERRIDAE)

TIAN MINGCHENG (Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica)
The present paper deals with the morphology of the hypopharyngeal bones of ten species, belonging to three genera of the Chinese mojarras.Based on their different features, the hypopharyngeal bones and pharyngeal teeth of 10 species can be divided into 6 morphological types as follows: Pentaprion longi-manus (Cantor) belongs to type Ⅰ (Pig. 2:B); Gerres oyena Forskal, G. acwac.es Blee-ker and G. oblongus Cuvier belong to type Ⅱ (Fig. 2: C, D, E); G. filmentosus Cuvier belongs to type Ⅲ (Fig. 2; F); G. lucidus Cuvier and 6. povti Cuvier et Valenciennes belong to Ⅳ (Fig. 2: G, H); G. abbreviate Bleeker belongs to type Ⅴ (Fig. 2:1); G. macrosoma Bleeker and Gerreomorpha japonica (Bleeker) belong to type Ⅵ (Fig. 2:J,K).The hypopharyngeal bones of mojarras are specialization of those of recent teleoste. Type Ⅰ is less specialized and is closer to the general types of other percoid fishes, such as Lateolabrax japonicus (Cuv. et Val.) (Fig. 2: A). The others are more specialized in different degress. The modifications of hypopharyogeal bone from type Ⅰ to type Ⅵ seem to show a progressive aspect of specialization, in which the connection of the two hypopharyngeal bone plates was closer and closer, and at the same time the thickness of the plates was increased and the pharyngeal teeth became larger and shorter gradually. These modi-fications made the hypopharyngeal bone more powerful for mastication of hard food, such as Crustacea, Polychaeta and Mollosca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda), etc. (Tab. 1).The characteristics of the hypopharyngeal bones and pharyngeal teeth are significant in systematic study of the family.
