Activity levels and rhythms of Feng carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Xingguo♀×Cyprinus carpio var. mirror splittered♂) and its parents on starvation and satiation

A 18-day trial with Videomex-V image motion monitor system was conducted to investigate the activity levels and rhythms in Feng carp (initial weight 2.44-2.68 g) (Cyprinus carpio var. Xingguo♀×Cyprinus carpio var. mirror splittered♂), mirror splittered carp (initial weight 2.30-2.63 g)(Cyprinus carpio var. mirror splittered) and Xingguo red carp (initial weight 2.33-2.58 g) (Cyprinus carpio var. Xingguo) on starvation and satiation. The trial was carried out in a self-circulation system consisting of 36 organic glass tanks (28 cm×24 cm×20 cm, water 10-12 cm deep). The monitor period was 11 h L∶11 h D with the light period from 9:00-20:00 and the dark period from (21:00 -) 8:00, and from 8:00 to 9:00, and 20:00 to 21:00, two hours were spent to adjust image motion monitor system. During the experiment, dissolved oxygen was maintained above 5.48 mg/ L, ammonia below 0.1158 mg/ L and the temperature 28℃. The fish were fasted one day at the beginning of the experiment, then individual fish were randomly selected, batch-weighed and allocated to each tank. Each combination of fish species and feeding or not contained 6 tanks selected randomly. Fish were fed twice a day (at 9:00 and 15:00), and uneaten feed was collected 1.5 h after feeding. The results showed: 1) activity levels for 3 species were significant lower in fasted fish than in fed fish, but the relative activity levels for 3 species were not affected by feeding; 2) Feng carp had similar activity levels to mirror splittered carp, and their activity levels were significant higher than Xingguo red carp whether fasted or fed. Feng carp has different activity rhythms with it’s male and female parents on starvation, while it has more similar activity rhythms to mirror splittered carp than to Xingguo red carp on satiation. In conclusion, for activity level and activity rhythm, Feng carp is more similar to it’s male parent than to it’s female parent.
