Application of Stable Isotopes Approach on Riparian Zone Function Research

Stable isotopes are extensively applied into areas of ecology,such as pollutant compounds of carbon and nitrogen attenuation,metabolic process and elements trace in ecosystem,etc.Through the review on research of denitrification process in riparian area,including limiting factors,rate and mechanism,the main advantage of approach is explained as the capability to indicate and discern the cumulative effect of spatial and temporal change on substance transfer.Mechanisms on how to realize a healthy state of riparian function for efficiently control the non-point pollution combined with analysis on the source and fate of natural material in riparian ecosystems are elaborated as important application of stable isotopes approach.The application on the study about riparian food web characteristics,i.e.nourishment components of organisms,trophic level relationship,and material connection with outer environment,is presented.The integration between stable isotopes approach and traditional geochemistry techniques is the trend of development in the riparian function studies,and as such,is proposed to be with significantly practical value to the nationwide ecological riparian zone construction and management.
