Study on Fractal Dimension and Stability of Land Use Types by GIS——A Case Application of Dianchi Lake Basin

Based on fractal method and GIS technology,the land use of can be classified into 5 types:cropland,woodland,grassland,water land,industrial and residential areas,and analysis on fractal dimension of Dian chi lake basin in Yunnan province.The algorithm is a fractal dimension expression about area and perimeter.The results indicate that land use type can be described with fractal structure.Fractal dimension(D) values vary from 1.09 to 1.35 in the case application of Dianchi lake basin.The D of land use types reflects the degree of complexity,stability and developing trend.When the value of fractal dimension(D) is 1.5,namely D is critical value;the change mode of land use types is Brown random movement.The more of value of D is closer to the critical value,the more the stability of land use type is worse,and the complexity of land use type is higher.Stability order from higher to lower based on fractal dimension is:woodland,grassland,cropland,and water area,industrial and residential areas.Correspondingly,the dimension of woodland and grassland are lower than industrial and residential areas because of simple structure and lack of human impact.Without considering the impact of water land,80.18 percent of studying areas hold the stability indexes between 0.2 to 0.5,which means the total stability is in a good condition.The research indicates that land use in Dianchi lake basin is developing steadily.Based on geographical and human factors that influence land use structure,the artificial measure and programming are proved reasonable.The fractal dimension values are integrative reflection of the land use structure and stability.
