Main Schools of Industrial Organization Theory and Its New Development

Industrial Organization Theory (IO Theory) had been focused on inter enterprises relationships, especially on monopoly and competition, and gradually extended to inner enterprise institutions, as well as enterprise_government relationships. The paper analyzes the main developments of IO Theory and the industrial organization policy in developed nations at different historical stages. It shows the viewpoints, methodology, and representatives of various IO theories schools, such as the Harvard School, the Chicago School, Contestable Market Theory and the New IO theory. Although disapprovals existed among the various main schools of Industrial Organization Theory, they also inherited each other, and became main theoretical support for governments' industrial organization policy under different economy background respectively. According to the authors, re_attaching importance to empirical study and reshaping the theory framework under globalization and knowledge economy will be breakthroughs of IO theory. Besides, further organization study on network infrastructure industries will be realistic and urgent to such industrial reforms.
