Research on Definitions of Polarization Mode Dispersion

Gong Yandong\ Qi Zanwei\ Jiang Zhongao\ Jian Shuisheng (Institute of Lightwave Technology, Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044)  
The origin of polarization mode despersion, its definitions come from two existing theories based on principal polarization state and time domain model, and the measurement methods are reviewed. Their compatible relationship is compared and expounded, and a discusion in quantity estimation is made.
