Effects of Dopants and Confined Windows on Laser Initiation Sensitivity of Explosives

The sensitivities of undoped and doped RDX and PETN with carbon black and carbon nanotubes to Nd:YAG pulsed laser were compared.The explosives were confined by K9 and sapphire glasses.The threshold initiation energy of explosives was measured in Bruccton method.The influences of doping with carbon black,confining by K9 glass,and using free-running laser on the initiating sensitivities were compared with that of doping with carbon nanotubes,confining by sapphire glass,and using Q-switched laser.The results show that the dopants,carbon black and carbon nanotubes can enhance the laser initiation sensitivities of RDX and PETN,and the doped effects of carbon black is better than that of carbon nanotubes.RDX and PETN have the minimum initiated energy when they are doped with 1% carbon black.The confined sapphire glasses with thickness of 2 mm can reduce the initiation energy of RDX,pure PETN and PETN doped with carbon black.The PETN doped with carbon nanotubes can be initiated more easily under the confinement of K9 glasses which also has a thickness of 2 mm.Under the confinement of K9 glass,most RDX can be initiated easier by free-running laser than by Q-switched laser,but Q-switched laser is more suitable for the initiation of PETN under confinement of K9 and sapphire glass.
