AN ANALYSIS ON THE FLEXIBILITY IN FLIGHT OF PROJECTILES OR ROCKETS HAVING HIGH L/D RATIOS

With the increase in the ratio of length to diameter and the velocity of flight for fin stabilized rod penetrators and long range rockets, the flexible deformation of the missile body and its effects on the ballistic performance have attracted more attention. In this paper the dynamic equations and the finite element model of flexible projectiles or rockets is presented. By way of an illustration, the dynamic deformation of the missile body, effects of initial velocity and L/D ratio on its flexible deformation, and effect of this flexibility on the ballistic performance are simulated and analyzed, some important results are thus reached at.
