Influences of Elastic Modulus and Thickness Ratios on Anti-penetration Performance of Composite Armors

The influences of elastic modulus and thickness ratio of a composite armor on anti-penetration performance were studied under the attacking of a kinetic projectile.Adopting the different elastic modulus in each layer of the composite armor,in the same conditions of structure and projectile speed and adopting the different thickness ratios of layers in the composite armor,in the same conditions of total mass and projectile speed,its anti-penetration performance were simulated by the MSC software of PATRAN and LS-DYNA and the velocity drop index.The simulated results show that the elastic modulus has strong effect on anti-penetration performance of composite armors;the optimal thickness ratio of composite armor can be obtained based on the method.The method can estimate the anti-penetration performance of the armors and provides an effective and economic approach for design of the armors.
