A Preliminary Study on the Chemotaxis of Hemocytes from Freshwater Mussels Stimulated by Bacteria

LI Jing SHI An-Jing LIU Ke-Wu YUAN Zhi-Gang(Life Science College, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610064,China)
The chemotactic migration of hemocytes from Anodonta woodiana pacifica and Hyriopsis cumingii as well as the effect of serum were reported. The chemotaxis was measured by capillary technique using Pseudomonas fluorescens and Aeromonas punctata f.intestinalis as chemotactic sti-muli. Hemocytes from both mussels showed chemotaxis to the bacteria. Chemotactic activity was significantly higher in groups with bacteria than that of controls without bacteria (P0 05). A.w.pacifica hemocytes showed significantly stronger ability of chemotactic migration than Hyriopsis cu-mingii(t-test, P0 05). There were more hemocytes migrated in the group with P.fluorescens than that with A.punctata f intestinalis. The chemotaxis of mussels hemocytes to bacteria was significantly enhanced by serum (P0 05).
