Types and Distribution of Mucous Cells in Mantle,Gill and Foot of Abalone Haliotis discus hannai

Mucous cells in the mantle,gill and foot of abalone Haliotis discus hannai were observed and analyzed by the method of AB-PAS (alcian blue and periodic acid schiffs reaction) combined procedure.According to the color of the mucous cells,they were divided into four types:typeⅠ,pure red; typeⅡ,pure blue; type Ⅲ,purple reddish; type Ⅳ,blue purple.Most of the mucous cells in the epithelia of mantle and tentacle of mantle were in type Ⅱ and a few of them were in type Ⅳ.The shapes of most mucous cells was in circle.The distribution of the mucous cells was not uniform in the tissues.The mucous cells were rich in the epithelia of gill axis and gill filaments,and most of them were in type Ⅱ and type Ⅰ,while a few were in type Ⅲ and type Ⅳ. Their shapes were cup-,circle- and stick-like.There were a few mucous cells in the epithelia of the foot,and all of them were in type Ⅱ.There were many brown particulates in some of the epithelial cells of the foot.
