The Ultrastructural Changes in Wheat Chloroplast Senescence and the Effects of BA on Chloroplast Membrane System

Detached wheat(Triticum aestivum,L. Nongdai 18: 85021) leaf segments of 10-day old seedling were induced senescence in the dark. Treated the leaves on 5μM BA and 2% Alcohol, the control were in distilled water. The ultrastructural changes were compared after 48 hours. BA appeared delay the senescence of leaves markedly by maintaining the thylakoid lamellae system as well as delaying the degradation of chlorophyll. The effects of BA like the well-known free radical scavenger alcohol. Of particular interesting is that BA seems likely to recover the senescing changes of the membrane. The results suggests that BA not only acts as a free radical scavenger, but also be able to repair the deteriorated membrane system of the aged ehloroplasts.
