Several Theoretical Problems in Negative Refraction Index Research

A review is presented of the theory in negative refraction index(NRI)study.Five years ago,the experiment of UCSD confirmed that left-handed medium(LHM)do indeed exhibit nega- tive refraction.We describe some of expections on the microwave anomalous propagation,such as the group negative refraction phenomena,the negative energy whenε<0 andμ<0,etc.We con- sider two main cruxes,one was that the possibility of appearance of the positive phase velocity (PPV)and the negative group velocity(NGV)simultaneously,the other was that the possibility of appearance of the negative phase velocity(NPV)and the NGV simultaneously.Because much ex- perimental evidence of NGV behavior are available now,the article of P.M.Valanju et.al.pub- lished in May 2002 is therefore incorrect.In the laboratories,obtaining the NGV are not a difficult problem.Finally,the paper presents a discussion on the calculation ofε_(eff) andμ_(eff) from measure- ments of the microwave network parameters。
