Study on the structure and property of attapulgite/rubber nanocomposites

A novel nanocomposite composed of attapulgite and rubber was prepared through mechanical blending. It was the first time to introduce the claim of “attapulgite/rubber nanocomposite”. The nanocomposites made were the attapulgite/NBR and attapulgite/CNBR nanocomposites and they possess excellent mechanical properties. The microstructure of attapulgite and its dispersed microstructure in nanocomposite were observed and analyzed with the aid of electronic microscope (TEM and SEM). It was found that the attapulgite is made up from micro particles which are composed of and stacked by a lot of nano fibers like needles whose diameters are 10~25?nm and lengths are 100~1?000?nm and the interaction between nano fibers is weak. These two discovers may help us to understand that the attapulgite can be separated into original nano fibers and dispersed in rubber matrix by the general mechanical blending means to form the nanocomposite. The surface chemistry characteristic of attapulgite was investigated by using EDS and FTIR. There were plenty of Si—OH groups on the surface of attapulgite. The possibility of reaction between silicone coupling agent Si 69 and attapulgite was examined by DSC and was testified further by the significant improvement of mechanical properties of nanocomposites when Si 69 was added into the nanocomposites. Finally, the fracture surface of nanocomposite was observed by using SEM.
