Preparation of cationic copolymer of DMDAAC/AM by inverse emulsion polymerization

Cationic copolymer of DMDAAC/AM was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization. This polymerization was initiated by a redox system. The influence of the type of emulsifiers, weight ratio of emulsifiers and the oil phase on the stability of the system was studied. The influence of various factors on the intrinsic viscosity was discussed. The factors included the weight ratio of emulsifiers, molar ratio of two monomers, concentration of monomers and the amount of EDTA. It is concluded that the system is stable when the compounding emulsifier is Span80/cationic emulsifier, the oil phase is petroleum ether and the value of HLB is below 5.96. The intrinsic viscosity was enhanced when the monomer concentration increased. But when the monomer concentration raised to the certain value, the intrinsic viscosity began to reduce. The intrinsic viscosity of copolymer decreased when the amount of DMDAAC in the molar ratio of two monomers or the amount of EDTA in the system raised.
